Overall Call:
In the best sense this is a typical Mamet film. Writer director David Mamet has made a career from writing big budget movies to allow him to put together his own films the way he wants them done (Homicide, House of Cards, The Winslow Boy). The Spanish Prisoner is the type of film made for renting. All the clues are laid out for you. But if you're not watching closely you might need to rewind to make sure you absorb all the details. The story is about a young man who feels he's going to be overlooked by his boss for a much deserved compensation for his new discovery. He then meets an interesting "friend" and quickly becomes embroiled with some shaky people and deals. A performance of note was Steve Martin succeeding in a dramatic role. The story definitely contains some holes. But it's a movie, so if you just go with the flow and like Mamet's style of writing you should enjoy this one.
Reasons For Recommendation:
