Overall Call:
Director Neil LaBute is successful once again in his third film and first without his own script. Having established himself as a harsh in-your-face
storyteller, Nurse Betty has been dubbed LaBute light - I do concur. This won't be everyone's cup
o' tea, but if familiar with his other films (In the Company of Men, Your
Friends and Neighbors), I think you'll like it. Renée Zellweger plays Betty
Sizemore, a delusional Midwest housewife in pursuit of her dreamboat man
from a soap opera - no, not the actor, the actual character. This isn't your
typical Hollywood fare; the story was very enjoyable and didn't always go
where I anticipated. Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock played great hitmen in
pursuit of Betty. Morgan Freeman was particularly refreshing, playing
completely against the stoic detective he has come to play so well and
often. He was down right amusing. Also excellent was Greg Kinnear as a
self-absorbed actor type. An off beat comedy played with a straight face.
Nurse Betty was a pleasant surprise. If in the mood for something different give it a shot.
Reasons For Recommendation:
+ Off beat straight faced comedy
+ Morgan Freeman poking fun at his usual role
+ Interesting script
