Overall Call:
This is Paul Thomas Anderson first film. His other two being the grand ensemble pieces Boogie Nights and Magnolia. All of these films I loved and you'll hear more of the latter two in upcoming issues. I listed this one first because if you're unfamiliar with Paul Thomas Anderson Hard Eight should be viewed first. Unlike his follow ups this film is small and more intimate in scope. It's almost as if Hard Eight is just a portion of one of his much grander attempts in film. So be forewarned, if you have seen his last two films before this one. Hard Eight is still a heavy character study just on a smaller scale and no less entertaining. It had a very limited release, but obviously enough of one to allow the right people to take notice allowing his next two to be done. I hope Anderson returns to this type of filmmaking in the near future. This movie gives you a chance to really get to know the cast of characters. The story is a fine one and if you're at all intrigued by the world of gambling this one will undoubtedly interest you. The main cast is great at fleshing out there roles for very rich performances. Gwyneth Paltrow does an excellent job playing opposite type in what have become semi-bland leading lady roles. If you dig this type of small indie picture, check it out you'll enjoy it.
Reasons For Recommendation:
+ Unique story telling
+ Great unforced subtle character humor
+ Nice intimate direction
