Overall Call:
Director Mark Pellington has delivered a rather effective mystery/thriller. In the vein of The Others, The Mothman Prophecies is more about around the corner scare and vague shadowy shock then full-on bloody carnage. Richard Gere and Laura Linney turn in solid portrayals. The actors also do justice to dialog that could have been quite hokey if there would have been a sliver of insincerity in the delivery. The story is loosely based on real events some 30 or so years ago placed in recent time for thematic purposes. Much of the scary aspects are successful because of the assured direction and excellent use of sound. The initial car crash in the beginning of the film could have been very routine. Pellington instead merged some swift editing and great utilization of sound effects to make the crash really stick out in my mind days after I saw the film. All in all if you want an other worldly uneasiness check out The Mothman Prophecies.
Reasons For Recommendation:
+ Great "around the corner scary"
+ Solid lead performances (Gere and Linney)
